Día de los Cuentos

On Sunday, October 30, join us for Día de los Cuentos (Day of Stories) from 1-4 p.m. This event is free with museum admission.

In honor of Dia de los Muertos, this event celebrates life, family, stories, memories, and ancestors. We will feature storytelling, story recording, a community altar, special art activities including mini sugar skull decorating and memory box making, and a book signing from 2-4 p.m. by award-winning writer Rosemary Zibart of her new middle grade chapter book, True Brit: Beatrice, 1940.

What would it be like for an English girl to come from rainy, war-torn England in 1940 and arrive in sunny bohemian Santa Fe? The answer is True Brit - Beatrice, 1940 – a new middle grade chapter book by Rosemary Zibart with illustrations by George Lawrence and published by Kinkajou Press, an imprint of Albuquerque-based Artemesia Publishing. True Brit is the first in the Far and Away series about young people displaced and relocated, 1939-1945.

In True Brit, a spoiled English girl, Beatrice Sims comes to Santa Fe to live with a practical, hard-working nurse Clementine Pope. At first, the twelve-year-old hates the dusty little town. But soon Beatrice makes friends with goofy Arabella, develops a crush on handsome Esteban and aids Ana, a shy Indian girl. First accused of being “faceta” – stuck up, Beatrice learns to change tires, ride wild ponies and helps Clem rescue a sick baby on an Indian pueblo.

Día de los Cuentos launches the museum's commitment to early childhood and family literacy as well as our new collaboration with "Día", El día de los niños/El día de los libros (Children's Day/Book Day). Día is a celebration EVERY DAY of children, families, and reading that culminates every year on April 30. The celebration emphasizes the importance of advocating literacy for children of all linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
